It’s astounding to me (& sorta sad) that when someone like Antoinette Tuff actually PRACTICES what many religious faiths and society at large have long PREACHED (re: what we should do when facing “THE ENEMY”) the world acts like a UFO just landed in our backyard.
Maybe instead of President Obama calling Tuff, she should’ve called HIM. If nothing else, she could remind him of the United States’ moral obligation to make some meaningful effort on behalf of all the innocents being slaughtered in Syria. What will it take? If only we could send this lovely woman straight to Bashar Al-Assad’s office and have her call 911 again. Who knows? Sadly, I think the US intervening in Syria is about as likely as a UFO landing in Bashar Al-Assad’s palace, performing the “de rigueur” anal probe that all alien creatures seem so fond of, and carry him away into space. But wouldn’t it be lovely if the US could behave on a global level just as Antoinette Tuff behaved in that school office?
And being a dyed-in-the-roots Democrat, I’d like to go on bi-partisan record as saying that Sen. John McCain has really impressed me in the years following his campaign for the presidency. He’s surprised me, Republican that he is.
Don’t get me wrong- I don’t regret not voting for McCain back in ’08, (at ALL) but I will say he’s shown himself to be a man of great integrity and moral conviction. Much more so than most so-called “bleeding heart” democrats I’ve seen. He’s been able to bask in the freedom that NOT being elected to president has afforded him. He speaks his mind, and doesn’t seem afraid to say what might not be popular. And in recent years, he has practically transformed himself into an old school “prophet” plucked right from the Bible. He has become something of a “Samuel” to Obama’s “King Saul“- serving as the moral critic of a great king’s failings. I’m also reminded of John the Baptist’s political punditry which he broadcast like some ancient CNN talking head (sorry Mr. Baptist) at the base of King Herod’s window. He’s been TIRELESS in his efforts to call Obama out on his lack of action regarding the carnage in Syria. And I praise him for that. He’s even made several trips over to Syria, personally witnessing the damage to it’s people (and to the security of the region in general). I never thought I’d see the day where I was urging my beloved Obama to heed McCain’s prophesying, but here I am doing just that.
