DOLLS WHO LOVE TOO MUCH! or…
DOLLS WHO RUN WITH WOLF DOLLS!
The doll at right is one that my mother made me, in my image. I added the glasses (made from bobby pins and painter’s tape) and the book.
Interesting sidenote is that Mary Doll’s skin is made from the sweatpants of my dead grandmother, whom we called “Big Mama.” I have many fond memories of summers in Baton Rouge at Big Mama’s house. And though it’s creepy (the skin part), it’s also comforting that she’s still with me in this way.
Long live Big Mama!!! The Bacon & Biscuit-makin’ Buxom Bell of Baton Rouge! You live on in many a quilt, and in this doll.
p.s. Props to Big Mama’s daughter- Katharine Birdsong (nee Kimball), my mother, who made my Mary Doll. When I got her she reeked of Parliament Lights. 🙂
